Ignoring Christmas

December 2020
Barbara Leeds

Three hundred thirty thousand Americans dead

I decline invitations
Stay home
Alone

Boxes of cookies arrive unexpectedly
Allergic, I regift them
And again receive
This time real food

On Zoom
I learn my would-have-been hosts have Covid

I wasn’t going to do Christmas
What do I need with presents?
      My self-preservation instincts strong
      My sister’s tumor benign
      Vaccines—and a new president—on their way
