America’s 244th Birthday

July 2020
Barbara Leeds

This Fourth of July
I wear black
I grieve for people I care about
And people I’ve never met
I grieve for those stuck in squalid refugee camps
Can’t move on, can’t go back
I grieve for those punished
For the circumstances of their birth
I stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter
I grieve for a land polluted
By greed
I grieve for America
